The 2D barcode scanner slot naturally collects accumulated material (dirt) from the surface of drivers’ licenses. Sometimes, small bits of the license break off and remain in the slot. In states that use paper stickers, parts of the sticker may tear off and stay lodged inside. These materials can block the optical scanner and/or the mechanical switches that detect the insertion/removal of a license. By following the procedure outlined below, you can clean the scanner and restore normal function.
SLOW – Takes 5+ seconds to beep after card withdrawal
NON-FUNCTIONAL – No beep at all
Insert a driver's license and quickly withdraw it.
If the RED LED turns on and stays SOLID (does not flicker), contact support to arrange for an RMA.
If the RED LED FLICKERS during card insertion/removal but there's no beep (or it takes 10+ seconds to beep), proceed to the Cleaning Procedure.
Visual Inspection & Manual Debris Removal
Use a flashlight and a plastic tool (e.g., coffee stirrer) to open the dust protector and inspect the barcode slot. If debris is visible, flip the unit over and shake it. If that fails, gently dislodge the material with a plastic knife or card. Do not use metal tools to avoid damaging internal components.
Compressed Air
If the unit is still slow, use a can of compressed air while holding the reader upside down. Ensure that only air is dispensed (avoid spraying liquid propellant). This helps clear dust from the optical sensors and is often effective for scanners that have become intermittent.
Call Support if Needed
If the issue persists, contact support by clicking here to request an RMA form. This will include return instructions and payment details for non-warranty repairs.
Note:
If some state-issued licenses scan properly while others are slow or fail, the issue may be partial obstruction of the optics. This can result from barcodes on certain licenses aligning with blocked portions of the scanner. In some cases, thin overlays or material fragments may be wedged deep inside and are not visible from the card slot. Disassembly may be required, and the scanner must be sent in for service.
