Unveiling the IDentiFake's Forensic Eye:

How It Works

The IDentiFake system is your vigilant partner in ID verification, combining a high-resolution image scanner, a Windows computer, and intelligent software to meticulously examine IDs. Here's its step-by-step process:

  1. Capturing the Evidence: The scanner snaps crystal-clear images of the ID, both front and back. Think of it as a CSI investigator collecting forensic evidence.
  2. Consulting the Database: The IDentiFake software delves into its vast library of over 6,800 known ID documents, searching for a match. It's like a detective flipping through a book of mugshots.
  3. Performing the Tests: The system rigorously conducts 40-60 meticulous tests on the captured images, scrutinizing various elements:
  1. Extracted data (like name, date of birth, etc.)
  2. Document design characteristics
  3. Visible security features
  4. For eligible IDs: magnetic stripes and contactless chips (for additional authenticity checks)
  1. Delivering the Verdict: Each test either passes or fails, and a final decision is made based on the overall results. If too many tests fail, the ID is flagged as potentially fake.
  2. Unveiling the Hidden Details: The system goes beyond what the naked eye can see, revealing security features and fine details that might elude human scrutiny.
  3. New: Providing Barcode detective and DMVCheck as additional methods to catch and authenticate US drivers licenses (WiFi required)

Understanding the Challenges:

Despite its precision, IDentiFake faces challenges similar to those encountered by human investigators:

  1. Condition of the ID: Worn, damaged, or poorly lit IDs can hinder accurate analysis, just as a blurry photograph might stump a detective.
  2. New Threats: Just as criminals develop new tactics, counterfeiters create increasingly sophisticated fakes. Regular software updates keep IDentiFake equipped to combat evolving threats.

Striving for Accuracy, Embracing Reality

IDentiFake is a powerful tool for detecting fake IDs, but it's essential to acknowledge that no technology is infallible. Just as even the most experienced detective can sometimes be misled, false positives (flagging a valid ID as fake) and false negatives (failing to catch a fake ID) can occur.

Understanding the Challenges:

  1. The Limits of Physical Inspection: IDentiFake relies on visual analysis, which can be hindered by:
  1. Damaged or severely worn IDs that obscure key details.
  2. Dirty scanners or IDs that distort images.
  3. High-quality counterfeits that closely mimic genuine documents.
  1. The Evolving Battleground: Counterfeiters constantly adapt their methods, creating new challenges for detection.

Staying Ahead of the Curve:

  1. Regular Software Updates: Just as detectives refine their techniques, IDentiFake receives regular updates to its software, incorporating new information about counterfeits and enhancing its ability to spot fakes.
  2. Community-Driven Intelligence: The "Report Issue" button empowers users to share problematic IDs, collectively building a knowledge base that fuels ongoing improvements.
  3. Maintenance Matters: Keeping scanners clean and well-maintained ensures optimal image quality and accuracy.

Handling Uncertainties:

  1. Operator Discretion: In cases of doubt, operators can leverage their judgment and training to make informed decisions.
  2. Additional Verification: The upcoming online service (available in Q1 2024) will provide the option to cross-check IDs against DMV databases for enhanced confidence.

Remember:

  1. False positives and negatives are rare but possible.
  2. IDentiFake is continuously evolving to combat new threats.
  3. By understanding its limitations and working together, we can maintain the highest level of security while minimizing potential errors.

Key Takeaways:

  1. Be aware of factors that can contribute to false results.
  2. Keep software and hardware updated for optimal performance.
  3. Utilize reporting mechanisms to aid in collective intelligence.
  4. Embrace additional verification tools when available.
  5. Exercise informed judgment when uncertainties arise.

By working together, we can ensure IDentiFake remains a formidable force against counterfeit IDs, protecting businesses and individuals alike.

Possible IDentiFake results

The IDentiFake will respond with various messages with the most common being

  1. Passed
  2. Attention
  3. Failed
  4. Unrecognized ID

Passed

Failed

Attention

When IDentiFake says "Passed," it's a positive sign, but not a guarantee. Here's how to interpret and respond:

✅ The ID has passed visual analysis, meaning its images, magnetic strip (if present), and RF chip (if present) all align with expectations based on the reference database.

✅ It's likely a genuine ID. However, as with any security system, there's always a chance, however small, that it could be a very well-crafted fake or the ID does not belong to the cardholder.

** Your Role as Human Authenticator:**

  1. Visually compare the person presenting the ID to the portrait image. Do they match?
  2. Be vigilant for inconsistencies in appearance, behavior, or information. Trust your instincts if something feels "off."
  3. Ask challenge questions if you have any doubts. Examples include:
  1. What's your date of birth?
  2. What's your current address?
  3. What's your signature?

DMVCheck - Online Verification

  1. See Apendix 3 - you'll have the option to cross-check IDs against DMV databases in 41 states (as of May 2024) for an added layer of confidence.

Rare but Possible: Fake IDs Passing

  1. While uncommon, it's possible for sophisticated fakes to pass initial inspection.
  2. Stay informed about common counterfeiting techniques and be attentive to potential red flags.
  3. If you suspect a fake, report it using the "Report Issue" button. This helps TokenWorks improve its software and protect others.  DMVCheck the ID - Apendix 3 - cross-check ID data against DMV databases in 41 states (as of May 2024) to authenticate Identity.

Remember:

  1. IDentiFake is a powerful tool, but it's not infallible.
  2. Your judgment and vigilance remain crucial for maintaining security.
  3. By combining technology and human expertise, we can effectively combat fake IDs and protect our businesses.

"Attention" Ahead: Navigating Potential Issues with Confidence

When IDentiFake signals "Attention," it's time to pause and investigate further. Here's how to interpret and address common scenarios:

1. Expired ID:

  1. The ID's expiration date has passed.
  2. Check your organization's policy regarding acceptance of expired IDs. Some jurisdictions or purposes may still allow them.
  3. If not accepted, politely inform the individual that their ID is expired and cannot be used.

2. Magnetic Stripe Issues:

  1. The ID's magnetic stripe is unreadable or not as expected.
  2. Reorient the card: Ensure the magnetic stripe is aligned correctly with the scanner's read head (see image below).
  3. Consider wear and tear: Magnetic stripes, like credit cards, can degrade over time, especially with frequent use. Failed reads are more common with older IDs.
  4. If the issue persists, proceed based on your organization's policy for handling IDs with unreadable magnetic stripes.

3. Passport RF Chip Issues:

  1. The passport's RF chip is unreadable or not as expected.
  2. Ensure proper placement: Place the passport flat on the scanner's RF reader (see image below).
  3. Consider damage: RF chips in heavily used passports can sometimes become damaged, making them unreadable.
  4. If the issue persists, proceed based on your organization's policy for handling passports with unreadable RF chips.

Remember:

  1. "Attention" doesn't necessarily mean the ID is fake, but it warrants closer inspection and careful decision-making based on your organization's guidelines.
  2. Utilize visual comparison and challenge questions if you have any doubts.
  3. Report any suspected fakes using the "Report Issue" button.

By understanding these scenarios and following best practices, you can confidently navigate "Attention" results and maintain security.

Red Flag: Understanding "Failed" Results and Taking Action

When IDentiFake returns a "Failed" result, it's a clear signal to proceed with caution. Here's how to interpret the potential causes and take appropriate steps:

Common Reasons for Failure:

  1. Damaged or Worn IDs: Older IDs or those with significant wear and tear may have obscured details or altered features, leading to failure.

This is an example of an ID with significant dirt that was identified as “unknown” - failed document classification

  1. Stickers or Tape: Obstructions like masking or duct tape (not official DMV stickers) can interfere with image analysis. If possible, remove and rescan.
  2. Dirty Scanner: Dust and dirt can accumulate over time, affecting image quality. Clean the scanner regularly as per the user manual.

This ID was mis-scanned or jammed in the motorized reader, which explains the horizontal image streaks

  1. Misoriented Magnetic Stripe: Ensure the magnetic stripe is aligned correctly with the scanner's read head.

  1. Damaged Magnetic Stripe: Unfortunately, DMVs don't replace IDs with damaged stripes. If other tests pass and the ID appears worn, it might have passed previously.
  2. Passport Misplacement: Fully insert the passport to the back and left side of the glass plate in the passport reader. Refer to instructional videos if needed.
  3. RF Chip Issues: For passports, ensure the contactless chip in the cover lies flush against the RF antenna.
  4. Outdated Software: Stay current! Updates often include new ID versions and accuracy improvements. Run the update process regularly.
  5. Document Classification Failure:

Document Classification Warning

The software might not recognize the ID due to:

  1. New versions not yet added to the database
  2. Significant damage
  3. Rare or non-standard ID types (e.g., "non-domiciled CDL")
  4. Very poor fakes
  5. Software being out of date

Potential Fake ID:

  1. If none of the above factors apply, the ID is likely a fake.
  2. Press the "Report Scan" button to inform TokenWorks.
  3. DMVCheck the ID - Appendix 3 -  If the ID is from the 41 participating states, then run a DMVCheck - Its like calling the police, but happens in 5 seconds and for as little as $1.25.
  4. Ask for alternative forms of ID.  But kids often use their real name and address on Fake IDs and just change the date of birth so often the alternative IDs will match.

Remember:

  1. Multiple failed tests usually indicate a fake.
  2. In rare cases, new fake versions might pass—reporting them is crucial for updates.
  3. Exercise judgment and follow company guidelines for handling failed scans.
  4. DMVCheck the ID - Authentic ID data in 5 seconds and for as little as $1.25.

By understanding these scenarios and taking appropriate action, you'll effectively maintain security and prevent fraudulent ID use.

When the Scan Speaks, It's Time to Listen and Respond:

Here's a guide to help you interpret scan results and take appropriate action:

1. Double-Check with a Different Scanner:

If a driver's license fails verification on the m500/m150 motorized scanner, but a passport scanner is available, scan the ID (front and back) using the passport reader. This provides a second opinion, capturing different details and potentially resolving discrepancies.

2. Engage in Dialogue:

Utilize challenge questions to gather more information and assess the ID holder's credibility. These questions can reveal inconsistencies or confirm details, aiding in decision-making.

3. Try a Different Angle:

Sometimes, a simple adjustment can make a big difference. If the initial scan is inconclusive, try changing the ID's orientation and rescanning. This can help capture clearer images and reveal details that might have been obscured.

4. Calibrate Your Confidence:

To ensure the scanner is functioning correctly, scan a known good ID. This helps verify that the system is producing accurate results and eliminates potential hardware or software issues as factors.  If its an M500, running the calibration may help if the scanner hasn’t been cleaned and calibrated recently.

Remember:

  1. These steps provide valuable insights and help you make informed decisions based on scan results.
  2. Exercise judgment and follow any additional guidelines or procedures outlined in your company's policies.
  3. If uncertainty persists, consider alternative verification methods or seek assistance from a supervisor.

By following these steps and working together, we can maintain a high level of security and accuracy in ID verification.
